From Aggression to Affection: Mulan’s Journey to a Forever Home

Published on

It’s hard to fathom just how many dogs never get the opportunity to show their real selves before it’s too late. For Mulan, a gentle pit bull, her protective nature almost cost her life.

Because of her fear and previous experiences, she was quickly labeled “aggressive” and placed on the euthanasia list at the shelter.

To the staff, she seemed “severely reactive,” barking at everyone who came near and keeping people away from her kennel. The outlook for her future was grim.

However, just as her story seemed to be ending, a rescuer with an unwavering spirit stepped in, ready to fight for Mulan’s life.

Mulan had ended up at the shelter after her owners were compelled to surrender her due to their landlord’s demands. Shy and lacking social skills, she found herself suddenly without a home.

Unfamiliar with people and other dogs, Mulan relied on her instincts for protection. For nearly two weeks, she stayed in her kennel, barking defensively at anyone who approached.

That’s when a volunteer reached out to Martha Moore, vice president of Friends of Guilford County Animal Shelter in North Carolina, to see if she could assist.

“She was so emotionally closed off and not allowing anyone near her kennel. She had to leave the shelter by the end of the day, or she would be euthanized,” Mulan’s foster mom explained to The Dodo.

Martha acted quickly, spending two hours sitting quietly by the kennel, slowly gaining Mulan’s trust. Eventually, the scared dog allowed Martha to slip a leash over her head and guide her to a safer place.

Initially, life in foster care was challenging for Mulan. Anxious and uneasy, she even destroyed a room one day. Yet, Martha responded with patience instead of frustration.

She sat calmly on the floor, ignored the chaos, and offered Mulan a treat. This act of quiet patience paid off when Mulan gently licked Martha’s face, as if showing gratitude for not giving up on her.

This marked the beginning of Mulan’s remarkable transformation. Over time, she started to open up to her foster family.

In just two weeks, she had changed significantly. Although she still needed a bit of time to get comfortable around new people, she began enjoying social interactions more freely.

“Mulan is sensitive and needs about 15 minutes to adapt to new people. Once she’s comfortable, she’ll be your lifelong friend,” Martha shared.

Amazingly, she began to enjoy belly rubs, hugs, and snuggles, activities that seemed unreachable before.

“Mulan delights in playing with other dogs, generously shares her toys, and even gets along with cats! She’s the total package,” Martha proudly posted on Facebook.

After two months of continual care, patience, and gentle interaction, Mulan became an entirely different dog.

When the day came for Mulan to be adopted, she was ready for her forever home. She found a family prepared to offer what she needed most: kindness, understanding, and unconditional love.
