While patrolling the streets of Pierce County, Washington, a sheriff’s deputy encountered a distressing event that highlighted the vulnerability of stray animals.
A white dog, wandering the streets, attempted to cross a busy road and was hit by a car. Injured and scared, the dog instinctively ran away from the road, seeking refuge.
Despite being in pain, the dog managed to crawl into a nearby concrete pipe. Concerned for the animal’s well-being, the deputy quickly followed with the intent to offer assistance.
Peering into the darkness of the pipe, the deputy spotted the dog’s eyes shining back at him, clearly pleading for help.
Determined not to abandon the frightened pup, the deputy gently coaxed her out of hiding with soft words. His soothing encouragement worked, and the dog began to emerge, albeit cautiously.
The officer then carefully picked her up and rushed her to a veterinary clinic for immediate care.
At the vet’s office, they discovered the dog did not have a microchip, meaning there was no owner to claim responsibility. This put her at risk of being euthanized.
Thankfully, People for Animal Care & Kindness (P.A.C.K.), an animal welfare organization based in Gig Harbor, Washington, came to her rescue.
P.A.C.K. committed to covering all costs for the dog’s necessary surgery, ensuring she received the urgent treatment required. Transferred to Sumner Veterinary Hospital, the dog was named Piper and began her journey to recovery.
“I was heartbroken to see this beautiful dog in such a state,” remarked Nichol Phillips, the marketing manager at Sumner Veterinary Hospital.
Receiving the needed medical care and attention, Piper started to feel safe and protected. Nichol expressed gratitude towards the deputy who went out of his way to help Piper, emphasizing the relief that came with seeing her find safety despite her ordeal.
Following her surgery, Piper was welcomed into a foster home. Here she continued to heal, building her confidence and learning to socialize with other dogs. She soon blossomed, delighting in car rides and eagerly making friends.
Piper is on track for a full recovery and, once healed, will be ready for adoption. With a bright future ahead, she will soon be able to leave her difficult past behind and embrace a happier life.
