Belah, a three-month-old puppy, found herself in a shelter after her previous owners gave her up. This once-happy pup had to adjust to the solitude of a kennel, but she maintained a hopeful attitude, believing that brighter days lay ahead.

When Ruff Start Rescue staff visited the northern Minnesota shelter with plans to rescue cats, they were drawn to Belah. While many of the dogs barked for attention, Belah sat quietly, extending a paw through the bars with a hopeful gaze. Her calm temperament won over the rescuers.

The rescuers were thrilled, and alongside the cats they came to transport, they took Belah with them. It was then they noticed a limp in her front left leg, the same one she had reached out with. Concerned, they took her to a veterinary clinic for an examination.

An X-ray revealed Belah had a severe angular limb deformity in her left leg and carpal hyperextension in her right leg. Although her condition, possibly due to birth defects or an old injury, was not painful, it did affect her stability.

Her rescuers were relieved to know she wasn’t in pain and quickly devised a plan to improve her mobility. The veterinary team suggested physical therapy and a custom brace to support her legs and prevent arthritis.
