Bringing a new dog into your home comes with a commitment to care for them through thick and thin. Unfortunately, some owners don’t uphold this promise when their pets need them the most.

Peanut Butter, a dog who recently experienced this heartbreak, found herself abandoned by her family during her toughest times. After surviving a severe dog attack, her owners decided they didn’t want to care for her injuries and surrendered her to Animal Care and Control in Alton, Illinois. Peanut Butter, already shaken by her ordeal, was then brought to Metro East Humane Society (MEHS) in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Upon arrival at the veterinary clinic, Peanut Butter was assessed by the medical team. She was visibly shaken, with her head down and tears in her eyes—a clear sign of her trauma. “She was traumatized and in total shock when she came in after going through all of that. She was practically catatonic on the surgery table during her initial clean-up and exam,” recalled Mady O’Reilly, a volunteer and foster caregiver at MEHS, in an interview with Newsweek.

The dog’s injuries included a hurt right foot and multiple puncture wounds on her neck, which caused swelling and trapped her choke collar. Despite the efforts of the caring staff to comfort her, Peanut Butter couldn’t hide her sadness while she was cleaned and treated.

Life at the shelter was difficult for Peanut Butter, whose heartache was evident as she sat quietly in the corner of her kennel, overwhelmed by the noise around her. O’Reilly, moved by Peanut Butter’s plight, decided to bring the dog home to foster her, offering the love and care she desperately needed.

In her new foster home, Peanut Butter was given the chance to relax and recover. Her transformation was remarkable, and O’Reilly was moved to tears upon seeing her finally sleep peacefully with a smile. “She had the cutest snores from her little gargoyle snout, and I cried happy tears to see her so relaxed. I literally couldn’t stop looking at her,” O’Reilly shared.

As trust grew, O’Reilly introduced Peanut Butter to the family’s other dogs. Slowly but surely, Peanut Butter started enjoying playtime and the companionship of her furry friends. Initially frightened of Jonathan, O’Reilly’s partner, Peanut Butter soon warmed up to him, ultimately embracing the love and support of her foster family.

With the perseverance and care of her foster family, Peanut Butter began to thrive. Her spirit lifted, she became a playful and happy dog, delighting in the simple joys of rolling in grass and wagging her tail.

Her positive change caught the attention of a young family with two children, who fell in love with her at first sight. They quickly decided to adopt her, ensuring she’d be cherished and loved. O’Reilly noted, “She was so gentle and sweet with their son. He dumped the whole bag of treats on the cement, and she was immediately his biggest fan.”
