Local journalist Eric Guzmán stumbled upon the touching scene and discovered that the mother dog had delivered seven puppies amid the straw bedding. Eric, moved by the sight, realized that the Christmas setup provided the dog with a rare sanctuary from the harsh conditions of street life during Palenque’s chilly December nights.
Eric shared with The Dodo his delight in finding the puppies safe and warm in their temporary home. While the town usually enjoys warm weather, the onset of cooler months prompts many stray dogs to seek shelter, and this particular pup found a fortuitous spot.
The endearing story captured the hearts of Palenque’s residents, leading many to visit the site with offerings of food and water for the new canine family. The local authorities have kindly permitted the dogs to remain in the nativity scene until they are ready to move on.
In a spirit of true community care, the animal rescue group Dejando Huellitas SOS Palenque has stepped in to support the mother and her puppies. They are actively looking for permanent, loving homes for them.
