Chata Gil, a warm-hearted resident of Los Angeles, was deeply moved when she encountered a troubling sight during a family visit to El Salvador. The streets were filled with abandoned dogs, and one in particular caught her attention—a dog that others dismissed due to its unkempt appearance.
While dining at a local restaurant, Chata noticed this neglected dog wandering from table to table, desperately seeking food. The other patrons shunned it, labeling it as “ugly” and showing no compassion. Undeterred by their reactions, Chata decided to make a difference and fed the dog, despite the disapproval and mockery she faced from onlookers.
The encounter stayed with Chata, and she couldn’t shake the thought of the vulnerable animal. Determined to help, she searched for the dog, eventually finding it alone on the street, curled up and afraid. Assuring the frightened dog she meant no harm, Chata offered food and began to earn its trust. She arranged for transportation to the veterinarian with the help of the Miracles of Love Association in El Salvador.
After a thorough examination, it was clear that the dog’s condition was not as dire as its appearance suggested. Although Chata initially contemplated euthanasia to relieve its apparent suffering, she was relieved to discover that recovery was possible. Seeking further support, Chata reached out to the Saving Huey Foundation, an animal rescue organization based in the United States, and named the dog “Sal.”
As Chata prepared to return to the U.S., Sal remained in El Salvador for ongoing treatment until he was fit enough to travel to Southern California. In the interim, a representative from the Saving Huey Foundation, Tracy Lystra, stayed in contact with Sal’s caretakers. Tracy is actively monitoring Sal’s health and managing his medical expenses via Paypal, ensuring Sal’s journey to a better life continues smoothly.
