Thor, a lively 8-week-old Chihuahua, is the perfect picture of puppyhood: full of curiosity, a healthy appetite, and a love for snuggles and playtime with his foster sister. But just a week ago, Thor’s life was hanging by a thread.

Everything changed for the little pup when animal control officers in Dickinson, Texas, found him in dire circumstances. They responded to a report of a suspicious waste bag abandoned by the roadside that seemed to be moving. Inside, they discovered Thor, a tiny 3-pound puppy, covered in fleas and blood, with his right eye severely injured and shivering from the chilly night air. Although he had a collar, indicative of having an owner at some point, it was obvious that he had been left to fend for himself.

Quickly transported to Animal Kingdom Pet Hospital, Thor was stabilized by the veterinary team. Unfortunately, his right eye was so badly damaged that the veterinarians had no choice but to remove it. The scars on his small body suggested a possible attack by another dog, although the exact cause of his injuries remains unknown.

“We were uncertain if Thor would make it through the surgery,” Kristin Smith, a veterinary technician at the clinic, shared with The Dodo. “Amazingly, he pulled through, and everything turned out better than we hoped.” At only eight weeks old, Thor was incredibly fortunate to have been rescued just in time. Smith believes he wouldn’t have survived another night alone.

During Thor’s recovery, Smith formed a bond with the puppy and decided to foster him, providing him a loving environment to heal. Bayou Animal Services offered to cover his medical expenses, alleviating some of the financial burdens. Smith noted, “With so many pets being surrendered during the holiday season, the shelter was overwhelmed, so taking him into my home seemed best.”

Thor showed an immediate desire for affection, always by Smith’s side, eager to cuddle whenever she was seated. His new home provided ample soft blankets, which he enjoys during nap time. “He’s very affectionate and loves cuddling,” Smith commented, adding that Thor’s sweet demeanor wins over everyone he meets.

Despite his tough start, Thor is recovering well from surgery and being treated for several parasites. His young age has helped him adapt quickly to life with one eye, and it seems to have little impact on his daily activities, according to Smith. Soon, the stitches on his eyelid will be removed, and he will continue receiving puppy vaccinations as he grows.

Smith expects Thor to be ready for adoption into a forever home shortly after the New Year. For now, however, he remains content and secure beside his foster mom and his cozy blankets. “Thor is resting peacefully tonight, without a care in the world,” Smith remarked. “He truly is the perfect little puppy.”
