When animal shelters become overcrowded, they are often confronted with the difficult decision of having to euthanize some of their animals, typically those that are sick or considered less adoptable.
This was the unfortunate situation for Darla, a timid Golden Retriever living at Laredo Animal Care Services in Texas. Due to the limited space, the shelter had already decided that Darla, who found shelter life particularly challenging, was to be euthanized.

In July 2023, the day arrived when Darla was scheduled for euthanasia. Overwhelmed by fear and unable to walk, the staff resorted to transporting her in a wheelbarrow to the euthanasia room.
However, as luck would have it, volunteers from Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), an organization that rescues animals from euthanasia, were visiting the shelter at that time. Clare Callison, APA!’s director of national operations, spotted Darla in the wheelbarrow and felt compelled to intervene. Clare said, “I knew it was around the time of day when the shelter does routine euthanasia for opening up kennel space.”

After learning from the staff that Darla’s shy demeanor had sealed her fate, Clare was moved by her gentle nature. Realizing that Darla was simply in need of love and care, the APA! team promptly arranged for a medical examination and learned that she was only an eight-month-old puppy, full of potential.
Through their collaboration with Mile High Lab Mission in Denver, Colorado, APA! quickly secured a foster home for Darla. This marked the beginning of her new life.

Upon meeting her foster family, Darla showed a remarkable transformation, joyously wagging her tail for the first time. Clare reflected on this transformation by saying, “She’s a completely different dog now.” By August 9, 2023, Darla had been officially adopted, as announced by Mile High Lab Mission.
Now, Darla enjoys a fulfilling life with a family that truly loves her, demonstrating the profound impact compassion and rescue efforts can have. Her journey from a wheelbarrow to a loving home exemplifies the difference that dedicated animal organizations can make.

Darla’s story is a reminder of the power of kindness, and we wish her a life overflowing with happiness and love.
