In June 2019, a four-month-old puppy, who would later be named La-Z-Boy Gatson, was discovered abandoned on a remote road in Lincoln County, Mississippi. Tragically, he was left alone beside a recliner chair and an old television, both discarded with him.

Huddled next to the furniture, the frail and starving pup still hoped his owners would return. He didn’t realize they had left him there for good.

Sharon Norton, an Animal Control Officer, was the first to spot the lonely puppy. Her heart ached at the sight of the small pup waiting by the chair, eyes full of hope. Despite his hunger and weariness, the puppy seemed to desperately cling to the dream of being reunited with his family.

Norton slowly approached him, offering some much-needed food and comforting words. Gaining his trust took little time. Feeling safe at last, the little dog wagged his tail as Norton gently carried him to her truck.

The puppy was taken to the Brookhaven City Shelter, where he received a bath and treatment for ringworm. From there, he moved to the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League to continue his recovery journey. Norton decided to give him the name La-Z-Boy Gatson, inspired by the recliner and the road where he was found.

At the shelter, La-Z-Boy proved to be friendly, quickly charming everyone with his playful nature. He loved napping, playing with other dogs, and splashing in water. Once back to full health, he was placed in foster care, eagerly waiting for a permanent home.

A month after his rescue, La-Z-Boy’s tale reached a couple in Michigan, Dave Trammell and Sommer Guy. Touched by his story, they embarked on a journey of over 15 hours to Mississippi to meet and adopt him. “Something about the way he looked just touched me. He just looked so cute and sad,” Trammell expressed.

La-Z-Boy settled quickly into his new home in Plymouth, Michigan. Within just a few days, he felt completely at ease, often napping with his belly up—a sure sign of a happy and secure dog. Now, he enjoys car rides with his canine sister, Penelope, and continues to indulge in his love for napping in his forever home.
