Jane Salazar and her husband have always opened their hearts to rescue dogs, prioritizing love and care over appearance or breed. Their mission was simple: to provide a loving home to dogs in need.
This philosophy led them to Diego, a fluffy mixed-breed pup with enchanting eyes who immediately became a cherished member of their family.
The couple quickly bonded with Diego, but soon faced a surprising challenge that would significantly alter their daily lives and unveil an unexpected discovery.

Friends and family often inquired about Diego’s breed, but for Jane, these questions felt unnecessary. It was Diego’s affectionate and lively nature that truly mattered. Despite this, their curiosity led them to submit Diego’s DNA for testing.
The test results revealed Diego to be a mix of Pitbull and Australian Cattle Dog. More importantly, they learned that Diego carried a genetic condition — progressive retinal atrophy, which meant he would eventually lose his sight.
A visit to a veterinary specialist confirmed that Diego was already experiencing early vision loss and that there was no available treatment.

In light of this, the ophthalmologist suggested getting another dog to accompany Diego and assist him when his humans were away. Taking this advice to heart, Jane began searching for the perfect companion.
Her search led her to Dixie, a dog with a gentle demeanor waiting at the Red Bank shelter in Tennessee, where Diego had also once lived. Jane immediately noticed Dixie’s calm yet lively spirit and her striking resemblance to Diego.
“They play beautifully together,” Jane observed, delighted by how well Dixie matched Diego’s energy and spirit. To learn more about Dixie, Jane decided to have her DNA tested too, and the results were astonishing.

Dixie and Diego were not just similar by coincidence — they were biological siblings, born to the same parents but in separate litters.
Unknowingly, Jane had reunited Diego with his sister, transforming their search for a companion into a touching family reunion.
Today, Diego and Dixie thrive together in Tennessee with the Salazars. They enjoy playful wrestling, resting side by side, and exploring their world as a team.

Their powerful bond exemplifies the strength of companionship. Although Diego will eventually navigate life without sight, he will have Dixie by his side, providing support and comfort as he adapts to his condition.
What began as a quest for companionship evolved into a heartwarming reunion. Diego and Dixie have found their rightful place — together, with a family that cherishes them both.
