Rachel was busy helping an injured dog when another, anxious dog approached her. She recalled to GeoBeats Animals, “I was on a different case… and Ellie came running up to my truck.” It was clear to Rachel that this stray, Ellie, was not shy to seek human help and exhibited a friendly demeanor.

Ellie was in poor shape, dirty, flea-ridden, and somewhat undernourished. Recognizing her need for care, Rachel promptly took her to a clinic in Texas. Comforted by Rachel’s presence, Ellie peacefully napped during the journey, a sign of her trust in her rescuer.

Once at the clinic, a surprise awaited them: Ellie was pregnant and nearly ready to give birth. This revelation explained her urgency in seeking assistance. The veterinary examination assured Rachel that both Ellie and her puppies were in good health and would be fine.

Reflecting on her sudden influx of canine companions, Rachel shared, “My soul puppy had just passed away right before that at 19 years old. So, I had zero dogs at the time. I went from zero dogs to very quickly having Ellie and all of her babies.”

After their release, Ellie and her puppies moved to Rachel’s home in Texas. Ellie proved to be a devoted mother, attentively caring for her pups and allowing Rachel to assist with the same trust. Rachel marveled at Ellie’s sweet nature and the story behind her abandonment, pondering whether her pregnancy had led to her being left behind.

In time, as the puppies grew, they received vaccinations and were soon adopted into new, loving homes. Rachel was overjoyed to see them find families of their own.

Ellie’s situation, however, unfolded differently. Rachel realized, “Once we had Ellie around the house, I just knew that she was mine.” Her decision solidified when one puppy, Bear, displayed a preference for staying with her mother over interacting with the other puppies. Rachel chose to keep Bear, finding comfort in their mutual happiness.

Now, with Rachel, both Ellie and Bear have found a place where they are truly loved, and it’s heartening to see the joy in their new life together.
