Heroic Bull Buffalo Defends Calf Against Lioness Attack

Last Update:

In a dramatic encounter in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a brave bull buffalo intervened to save a mother and her calf from a lioness attack, resulting in the death of one of the predators.

The incident began when two lionesses stalked a buffalo calf, prompting its mother to charge at them in defense.

However, the mother buffalo soon found herself outnumbered by the predators. Photographer Wim van den Heever witnessed the intense struggle as the lions repeatedly tried to bring down the mother buffalo.

Van den Heever, 43, described the scene: “The bull chased the female lions off the mother buffalo, trying to injure them. He saw the injured lioness and finished her by mauling and pushing her into the mud. I’ve never witnessed anything like this.”
