Tortoiseshell cats, known for their striking and almost ethereal markings, have long captured the fascination of feline enthusiasts.
Most notably, these cats are predominantly female, with 99.6% belonging to that gender, making male tortoiseshells extremely rare. This rarity has woven them into folklore as symbols of good luck and prosperity in various cultures.
Recently, a unique tortoiseshell kitten made waves when it was brought to a shelter in Oregon. Not only did its eye-catching coat draw attention, but an astonishing discovery about its gender turned heads.

The shelter staff named the kitten Cindy, believing it was female based on its appearance. However, as they prepared Cindy for a routine spay, they made an unexpected discovery.
The kitten, now known as Cinder, was found to be a hermaphrodite—a creature with both male and female reproductive organs. “It was like spotting a unicorn,” remarked staff at the shelter, as such cases are exceedingly rare.
Initially thought to be female due to its coat color and external genitalia, Cinder’s case became a hallmark event at the Humane Society of Central Oregon.
When the veterinary team investigated further during the spay procedure, they discovered Cinder lacked a uterus or ovaries, but instead had two testicles.
This unusual case sheds light on the complexities of hermaphroditism, where variations can occur.

Medical Director Dr. Crystal Bloodworth shared on Facebook, “To refer to it as male is challenging, but due to societal and biological perceptions, we chose male.”
Cinder’s genetic make-up likely includes an XXY chromosome pattern, explaining the blend of male and female characteristics—two X chromosomes for the tortoiseshell coloring and a Y chromosome allowing for the presence of testicles.
Dr. Bloodworth explained that while Cinder appeared externally female, the kitten’s internal structures told a different story.
The discovery surprised many, including Clinic Manager Bailey Shelton. “In my nine years in veterinary work, encountering a male tortoiseshell has been a career-defining moment,” she said.
Despite the rarity of the situation, Cinder behaves just like any other playful kitten, ensuring its unique biological status will not hinder its chances of finding a loving home.
Cinder’s story is a reminder of the unexpected surprises that the animal world holds, capturing the awe and curiosity of those who care for these extraordinary creatures.
