Rescue and Hope: Abandoned Doodle Dogs Begin Their Journey to Healing

Published on

Abandonment and neglect can have a devastating impact on animals, especially dogs, who may lose trust in humans and, at times, forget how to express their natural joyful behaviors.

Unfortunately, this was the case for 18 Doodle dogs found roaming the streets of Whatcom County, Washington.

These Doodles, renowned for their costly price and popularity, led rescuers to suspect they originated from a single irresponsible breeder.

The thought that these dogs were likely part of a negligent breeding operation only deepened the sorrowful nature of the situation.

Upon rescue, it was clear that many of the dogs were too frightened to leave their kennels. The youngest among them were just five months old, while the oldest were around four years of age.

Alarmingly, many had never experienced interaction with humans.

Reflecting on this, a volunteer from the Whatcom Humane Society (WCHS) noted, “Negative interaction with people or just no interaction with people can be just as bad.”

Fortunately, the WCHS acted swiftly, rescuing the dogs from the cold streets and giving them a fresh start. Small signs, such as chewing on toys or exploring their new surroundings, provided hope that, with time, love, and care, these Doodles could heal.

The World Animal Foundation reports that approximately 3.9 million dogs are abandoned annually in the United States. The fact that these 18 dogs were all Doodles triggered concern.

As a trendy “designer breed,” it seemed plausible that their abandonment was due to a profit-driven breeding operation.

Laura Clark, the WCHS executive director, explained, “It appears that they are part of a large-scale breeding operation.

The bottom has fallen out of that, and for whatever reason, instead of finding the appropriate place for animals, they’ve been abandoned.”

These Doodles were likely cast aside because they no longer met the breeder’s standards, treated callously as mere objects.

Local authorities are now investigating to trace the individuals responsible for this cruelty. The WCHS has called on the public to provide any information that might assist the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

Thankfully, a more hopeful chapter is beginning to unfold. Generous animal lovers have come forward, donating funds needed for medical care, grooming, and rehabilitation of the rescued dogs.

With this outpouring of support, the WCHS veterinary team has been able to help these dogs on their road to recovery.

While these Doodles are still in the healing process, the high level of interest from potential adopters reassures that they will soon find the loving homes they deserve.

For now, these once-abandoned pets are safe, receiving the care they need, and on their way to a brighter future.
