Abandoned in the woods with no means to survive, Keanu faced harsh conditions alone. With freezing temperatures and no food or water, he was barely holding on when hope arrived in the form of two compassionate individuals.
During a routine outing, Ne La and Adrian stumbled upon Keanu, finding him in dire straits on the brink of death. He lay almost lifeless, unable to move, severely weakened by his circumstances.
Realizing the urgency of the situation, Ne La and Adrian reached out to 1 Dog At A Time Rescue. Keanu was quickly transferred under the care of Denisa, the organization’s veterinarian.
“It took several hours before he started to come through and respond. He could barely lift his head at the beginning,” recounted Jayne, who co-founded We Love Animals.
During the drive to the clinic, Keanu, too weak to do anything else, placed his trust in the people who vowed to help him. He received fluids at the clinic, and after enduring hours of care, he managed to open his eyes and affectionately lick his rescuers’ hands in gratitude.
The gentle nature of Keanu endeared him to everyone who met him, with Jayne noting, “Everybody that met him just fell in love with him. Just very gentle. Very, very gentle.”
During his first week of recovery, Keanu remained mostly still to regain his strength, relying on regular food and water. Over time, however, he began to show improvement, reaching a remarkable milestone when he stood up and tentatively took a few steps.
Keanu’s journey of healing was extraordinary. He progressed to walking longer distances and even made new animal friends, including a dog named Elsa, who helped him rediscover the joy of play.
Despite his newfound activity, Keanu cherished simple pleasures. “He is such a gentle boy, and is so relaxed with all our other dogs. He is very much his own person, and loves nothing more than lying outside under a tree and just be,” said a member of the rescue.
Throughout his recovery, Keanu’s happiness and gratitude were evident, and he showed a playful spirit as he got ready to reciprocate the love he received.
“He’s one of those dogs that comes around once in a lifetime. He’s a very special dog,” Jayne remarked.
Ultimately, Keanu found a permanent home with a caring family, where he now thrives in a life full of love, adventure, and companionship. After overcoming such adversity, Keanu truly earned his fresh start.
