Actress Scarlett Johansson has addressed the recent controversy surrounding her comments on casting diversity, stating that her remarks were misrepresented and taken out of context. The “Avengers” star reaffirmed her support for diversity in the film industry.

Johansson responded to the uproar sparked by an interview published in As If magazine, where she discussed the intersection of political correctness and art with contemporary artist David Salle.

She emphasized that her words were distorted for sensationalism, saying, “A recently published interview has been edited for clickbait and is widely taken out of context.”

In the As If article, Johansson asserted that actors should be free to portray any character, regardless of race, species, or gender, as it is part of their profession’s scope.

However, she acknowledged the societal importance of diversity in casting while highlighting the occasional conflict between artistic expression and social expectations.

The actress has faced criticism in the past for her casting choices, notably for playing an Asian character in “Ghost in the Shell” in 2017 and for withdrawing from portraying a transgender man in “Rub & Tug” following objections from transgender actors and advocates.

While Johansson expressed regret over not being able to portray Dante “Tex” Gill’s story authentically, she acknowledged the significance of casting transgender actors in transgender roles, stating, “I understand why many feel a transgender person should portray him.”

In her recent statement, Johansson clarified her stance, advocating for artistic freedom while recognizing the industry’s systemic biases that often favor Caucasian, cisgender actors.

She reiterated her commitment to supporting diversity and equal opportunities in the entertainment industry.
