Owning a dog can be one of life’s greatest joys, but it can also bring unexpected challenges that test our love and resilience. Erin Dogouet, a ranch owner in Texas, recently faced such a test when her beloved livestock guardian dog, Ziva, went missing under alarming circumstances.
Erin had left for a trip to Colorado, entrusting the care of her ranch, which included Ziva and many other animals, to her sister Shannon and a pet sitter named Taelyn. However, during her absence, the area was hit by heavy flooding. This natural disaster set the stage for Ziva’s disappearance, as she was compelled to chase after a wild animal, unknowingly venturing into danger.
Ziva, a devoted Kangal breed dog, ended up at the edge of the ranch near a river. Unfortunately, the rising floodwaters created a perilous situation for her. Caught in a flooded gully, she was unable to escape due to the three steep sides surrounding her and the roaring river cutting off her path back home.
Erin described the heart-stopping situation to People, stating, “Ziva was found trapped in a flooded gully along the flooded Medina River. The roaring river blocked any escape back home, and the three other sides were too steep and slick for her to climb out on her own.”
Thankfully, Ziva was wearing a GPS collar. When Erin was notified of Ziva’s disappearance, she used the tracking app to pinpoint the dog’s location. Despite the app showing the same coordinates for hours, suggesting Ziva might not survive, Shannon and Taelyn rushed to where the signal came from without delay.
Upon reaching the gully, they faced the daunting task of locating Ziva amidst the floodwaters and mud. At last, they spotted her—alive but struggling to free herself. They worked quickly and carefully to help Ziva out of her dangerous predicament, bringing her back to solid ground mere minutes later.
Erin received the relieving news of Ziva’s rescue, filled with gratitude and relief. The ordeal left Ziva exhausted but miraculously unharmed. Once back at the ranch, the 120-pound dog settled in for a well-deserved rest, sleeping for over ten hours.
This challenging experience only deepened Erin’s bond with Ziva, highlighting the emotional commitment and joy that come with having a devoted companion like Ziva by her side.
