Glandwr Cymru, also known as the Canal & River Trust in Wales, urges everyone to participate in the final round of Wales ‘Tree of the Year’ contest by voting for their own Giant Redwood.
The Giant Redwood tree is located near Llangattock, by the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. It is estimated to have been around for more than 150 years and is an impressive 126 feet tall, surpassing the height of the well-known Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Wrexham. To put it into perspective, the tree is twice as tall as your typical rugby goalpost.
According to Glandwr Cymru waterway supervisor Kevin Phillips, the Giant Redwood is a magnificent tree with a magical quality reminiscent of a fairy tale. In fact, one can easily picture a door in its trunk leading to another world! The tree has gained immense popularity among visitors to the canal.
The Llangattock Woodland Group, a local organization that aids in the upkeep of the canal and surrounding wildlife, has worked tirelessly to clear a path to the tree, ensuring that people can appreciate it. Phillips urges all lovers of the tree or canal to show their support by voting.
