Unlikely Heroes: Foxes Chase Off a Cheetah in Tanzania

Last Update:

Two daring foxes in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area reversed the typical predator-prey dynamic, transforming from hunted to hunters by scaring off a young cheetah.

The unexpected events unfolded when the cheetah encountered a bat-eared fox resting nearby.

Initially stalking what it thought would be an easy target, the cheetah was surprised when a second fox appeared.

The pair teamed up, puffing up their fur—particularly on their tails—to appear larger and more intimidating.

In a swift change of roles, the cheetah, realizing it was outnumbered, bolted as the two foxes chased it away.

Amateur wildlife photographer Astrid Kindsvogel, who captured the rare scene while on holiday in Tanzania last month, shared her experience.

“We were out early, looking for wildlife, when we spotted a cheetah near a resting bat-eared fox,” said the 44-year-old commercial manager from Heidelberg, Germany.

“I thought something interesting might happen when the cheetah began stalking the fox. But within moments, another fox arrived, and they both fluffed up their fur to seem bigger.

Before I knew it, the foxes were chasing the cheetah—it felt more like a playful interaction, and neither seemed intent on causing harm.”

Astrid, who has a long-standing passion for wildlife and photography, added, “It was one of the most unusual encounters I’ve ever witnessed.”
