A mother elephant’s incredible persistence saved her baby from a muddy well after an exhausting 11-hour ordeal in the Chatra district of India.
The calf became trapped in the well around 9 p.m., prompting the mother to stay by its side through the night. She tried tirelessly to free the baby, using her trunk and feet to pull it out.
However, her frantic efforts unintentionally worsened the situation, as more mud slid into the well, further trapping the calf.
The calf’s distressed cries eventually caught the attention of nearby villagers, who rushed to help early the next morning. Recognizing the mother’s determination, they devised a plan to temporarily distract her.
Jitendra Tiwari, a witness who also participated in the rescue, explained: “We chopped some banana trunks and placed them near the well to lure the mother away. This gave us the chance to clear the excess soil that was blocking her efforts to reach the calf.”
Once the obstruction was removed, the mother elephant used her trunk to pull the mud-covered baby out of the well.
Moments later, the two were seen affectionately entwining their trunks before continuing their journey together.
The incident highlights the bond between mother elephants and their calves, as well as the compassion of the local villagers who stepped in to assist.
