A heartwarming video captured three delightful elephants, including a baby named Ronaldo, as they relished a playful mud bath in a sanctuary in northern Thailand.

Ronaldo, named after the famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, was the first to discover the muddy spot in Chiang Mai province last Sunday.

He immediately began rubbing against and rolling in the mud. Soon after, two adult elephants, Boontong and Lersoo, joined Ronaldo in fun, sticking together until it was time for a meal at the animal camp.

Mud baths are essential for elephants, helping them stay cool on hot days. The mud also provides a protective layer against the sun’s harmful rays and offers relief from insect bites.

Caretaker Suthatta Seesan said, “After the rain, they came out and started to move along the dirt tracks. The little one was so smart; he knew mud would be on that spot after the rain.”

She added that the elephants appeared happy during their mud bath and were “silly creatures,” but their happiness mattered most.

Following the muddy adventure, caretakers cleaned the elephants and provided them with food alongside other residents at the camp.

Elephants are the national animal of Thailand, with approximately 2,000 living in the wild and a similar number in captivity.

In the wild, they inhabit deep jungles and protected national parks but often come across humans on roads and villages. Elephants are protected by Thai law; killing them can result in up to three years in prison and a 1,000 baht (£25) fine.
