The African elephant population has been threatened due to habitat loss and poaching, leading to an alarming decline in their numbers. However, the story of one elephant offers a glimmer of hope.
In 2001, rescuers found a two-month-old baby elephant, Thoma, close to death in a small cage in Central Kenya.
Her home forest had been destroyed by human settlements, leaving her in a coma and fighting for her life.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) reported that elephants in the region are terrified and only venture out at night to forage for food. They face “pain and horror at the hands of humans.”
Thankfully, Thoma was taken to the DSWT Elephant Orphanage, where she spent several years recovering. Today, she is a healthy and happy elephant and, most remarkably, a mother.
