In a heartwarming tale of friendship, Khanyisa, a delightful albino elephant, became a beloved playmate at the HERD elephant sanctuary and orphanage in South Africa.
Rescued by Adine Roode, the sanctuary’s founder, Khanyisa was embraced by the Jabulani elephant herd, who treated her like family.
Under the care of the sanctuary team and the wise elders of the herd, Khanyisa flourished. The playful young elephant was recently spotted in the wild, foraging alongside her herd mates. Timisa, her dear friend, captured her attention.
However, Timisa was preoccupied with unearthing and devouring roots, while mischievous Khanyisa couldn’t resist the temptation to sneak a few for herself.

To ensure the safety and guidance of the two youngest members of the herd, Khanyisa, and Timisa, their allomother, Kumbura, kept a watchful eye. Adine and Tigere, caregivers at the sanctuary, nourished Khanyisa as Kumbura stood close by, keeping a protective gaze over them.
Extracting roots from the ground proved to be a challenging task, one that required practice for the young elephants. Consuming leaves and grass came naturally, but retrieving tree roots needed more effort.
These roots are vital food sources for elephants during dry winters. Kumbura, a devoted nanny to Timisa, also extended her nurturing care to Khanyisl.

Tigere kindly offered Khanyisa a freshly broken branch, encouraging her to learn the art of root extraction. However, the mischievous young elephant’s curiosity led her to inspect a wound on Adine’s leg from a recent cycling accident.
Adine gently spoke to Khanyisa, envisioning a future where she would grow into a magnificent elephant with beautiful tusks. Throughout this interaction, Kumbura remained ever watchful, ensuring Khanyisa’s safety.
Having been rescued and rehabilitated in the herf, Kumbura passed on her nurturing nature and support to the other orphans.

While Khanyisa continued to relish branches and leaves, she eagerly seized every opportunity to practice her root-pulling skills, proudly displaying her strength and abilities.
By sharing moments of joy, friendship, and nurturing care, Khanyisa, Timisa, and Kumbura remind us of the resilience and love found within the animal kingdom.
