Rescue teams rushed to assist a dog in distress, facing a challenging task in removing a collar that was tight and uncomfortable. After numerous attempts, it was only with the help of specialized cutting tools that the team successfully freed the dog from its predicament.
Once the collar was removed, veterinarians attended to the dog’s injuries, carefully cleaning and treating the wounds. Meanwhile, law enforcement is conducting an active investigation to identify those responsible for this act of animal cruelty.
In China, animal cruelty has not yet been legally prohibited, and despite a rising movement against such practices, dog meat is still consumed in many areas. The consumption of dog meat is particularly popular during the colder months, but some traditions, such as beating dogs to enhance the flavor, are met with opposition.
Earlier this year, in Chongqing, located in southwestern China, animal welfare volunteers, along with the police, uncovered over 1,500 dogs in deplorable conditions. These dogs were packed into tiny cages, where they could not even stand, and were severely malnourished and dehydrated.
The frightened animals were being transported to a slaughterhouse, facing a 22-hour journey too harsh to endure given their frail state. Volunteers took action, moving the dogs to a nearby farm where they received food, water, and urgent medical care. Despite these efforts, many dogs were already too weak to survive.
Historically, while the Chinese were pioneers in domesticating dogs and keeping them as pets, the consumption of dog meat dates back to the era of Confucius and possibly earlier. This longstanding tradition continues to be a source of food in various regions of the country.
